Introduction :

WPC Certification issued by the Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) Wing of the Ministry of Communications in India. This certification is required for any device that operates in the wireless communication spectrum. The WPC certification ensures that products using radio frequencies comply with Indian regulations for their safety and proper use.

The WPC certification is primarily concerned with ensuring that the wireless communication equipment, such as mobile phones, wireless routers, GPS devices, and other radio frequency-based devices, meet the regulatory requirements set by the Indian government.

It ensures that such devices do not interfere with other communication systems and adhere to the allowed frequency bands in India.

Scope of WPC Certification :

  • Devices such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, radios, GPS equipment, smartwatches, drones, and any product that operates using radio frequency (RF) signals require WPC certification before they can be sold in India.
  • It also covers the import of wireless communication products into India.

Consequences of Non-Compliance :

  • Selling wireless devices in India without WPC certification is illegal and could lead to penalties, fines, or confiscation of products.
  • Non-certified devices might not function properly within India’s frequency spectrum and could interfere with essential communication services.

    WPC Certification Process :

Prepare Documentation > Product Testing and Evaluation > Application Submission > Wait For Processing > Issuance of WPC certificate.

    • Application: Manufacturers or importers of wireless communication devices must apply to the WPC for certification.
    • Testing: Devices are tested to ensure they comply with Indian frequency norms, power limits, and other technical parameters. This includes ensuring the product works within the licensed spectrum and does not interfere with other communication channels.
    • Approval: Once a device passes the required tests, WPC grants the certification, which allows it to be legally sold and used in India.

      Types of Certification :

WPC issues two main types of certifications:

        • Type Approval Certification: This is granted to products that comply with the technical standards and regulations.
        • Equipment Authorization: This is typically needed for products that require a license to use specific frequency bands, such as satellite communication equipment, GPS devices, etc.
